What is the biblical significance of circumcision? I understand the who, what and when of the practice, but why? I was circumcised days after my birth so I don’t have to worry about it now but I’d like know why this practice came about and what it truly means.

Circumcision is basically a sign of the covenant that was made between Abraham and his descendants and Yah. All covenants must be accompanied by an outward sign. And the details of this particular covenant can be found in Genesis 17:

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Yah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty Elohim; walk before me, and be you perfect.

2 And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and Elohim talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be an Elohim unto you, and to your descendants after you.

8 And I will give unto you, and to your descendants after you, the land in which you are a sojourner, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their Elohim.

9 And Elohim said unto Abraham, You shall keep my covenant therefore, you, and your descendants after you in their generations.

10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after you; Every male child among you shall be circumcised.

11 And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskins; and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.

13 He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with your money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcised male child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.

While physical circumcision is important, it is only a type and shadow of the substance that is the circumcision of the heart. The same way the laws written on stone represent the type and shadow of the laws being written on our hearts at a future time, as stated in Jeremiah 31:33:

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, says Yah, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people.

So the substance and spiritual fulfillment of circumcision is explained in Deuteronomy 30:

4 If any of you are driven out unto the farthest parts of heaven, from there will Yah your Elohim gather you, and from there will he bring you:

5 And Yah your Elohim will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and he will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers.

6 And Yah your Elohim will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your descendants, to love Yah your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live.

Hope this helps to clear it up for you.
